Alan Dawson’s Biography

My career began aged 16 in the Royal Air Force, initiated with the obligatory square-bashing, a healthy respect for the Welsh Brecon Beacons and 18 months of intensive technical training.

After graduation came UK postings in Flying Training Command on first-line and scheduled servicing aircraft maintenance. Next stop, seconded to the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display team, technical support unit, a truly unique experience. 

I vividly recall precise operating standards and exceptional teamwork at every level. That experience formed a lifetime benchmark and unbeatable preparation for my future people-centric career. 

After military service, 20+ years of commercial success began in the global medical technology space. I progressed through the ranks to become accountable for teams, divisions, and company leadership. As my personal development and transformation evolved, I learned the importance of meticulous people selection, talent development, team building, and continuous development of others. They continue to be the main pillars of my success and life’s work. 

My executive roles with international corporates ranged from Sales Director, General Manager and Managing Director. I became particularly focused on leadership density and the development of emerging leaders, helping steer their route to potential.

I received the President’s International Award for leadership at Spacelabs Medical, a Seattle-based global medical technology specialist.

Previously at BOC Ohmeda, heading the UK and Ireland anaesthesia and patient ventilation division, I twice won their ‘Wilkinson Sword of Excellence” for exceptional leadership.

Over the years, other awards arrived, and I dedicate all of my success to the members of my outstanding teams. During our joint endeavours, many gained career recognition and awards.

In 2002, I launched my professional leadership development and coaching consultancy to pass on my leadership baton and help aspiring and experienced leaders reach their potential. 

Many of my proteges have gained promotions and top jobs throughout the UK and internationally. I salute them all.

I am a specialist leadership coach, operating at the developmental and transformational end of the coaching continuum and loving every minute.

Digital age marketing has meant significant change for everyone. Customers have wrestled control of suppliers’ sales process, which is a severe challenge for leaders. Traditional sales team activity is ineffective; some say dying. Customers no longer need suppliers to prospect and pitch product information. It is all accessible via a keyboard. That’s tough for sellers trying to spot opportunities. They are included in the decision process too late. Better interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence are required to support excellent communication for essential progress.
